Hopefully we all have an understanding of how important social media is in running a successful business these days. Even if you have a beautiful shop bang smack in the middle of a busy town, many of your customers are still going to be looking for you online, and that’s more than likely to be from their mobile phone! This means it is crucial to your business success that you have a unique website and that as part of your marketing strategy, you post on your social media platforms regularly.
Now that being said, one of the biggest and most influential platforms is Instagram which has been growing consistently over the years and has become and favourite for advertising and engaging with customers [think Mrs Hinch] and the biggest question I get asked is “Linds, should I be on Instagram?” or “what do you think about Instagram?”
As with all marketing people, my answer usually starts with, “well it depends!!!”
Who are you targetting?
What I want you to do is think about your ideal customer, how old are they? What do they do in their spare time? What are their hobbies? Do you think they would be on Instagram? The stats say that if they’re between the ages of 18-34, chances are they are on Instagram. 80% of Instagram users follow at least one business account too. Now when you think that there are 1 billion active Instagram accounts, that’s a whole load of people ready to engage with you and your business!
It’s not for everyone!
Instagram isn’t for every business, so don’t feel like you’re missing out on the action if your ideal customers isn’t an Instagram user, there are PLENTY of other social media platforms to get your teeth into, and as with everything, the more you put into this area of your business, the more rewards you will reap!
One last thing I say to all of my clients is if you are going to do it, please make sure you do it well! There is nothing worse than setting out with the best intentions only to be disheartened after the first month when your posts aren’t reaching over 1,000 people! Your social media content should form part of an overall marketing strategy and should allow you to interact with your customers in a fun and engaging way!
